Waldsassen – Our Closest Neighbour Abroad

The town of Waldsassen, the historic centre of Stiftland, located in the forests of the Upper Palatinate, is located near the Czech-German boarder in the wide valley called Wondrebtal. Many charming hiking and cycling routes, excursions to its surroundings, and affectionately maintained traditions – all come together to create the magic of this area.

Exceptional cultural monuments entice many visitors: Stiftbazilika. – the basilica in Waldsassen, one of the most spectacular Baroque churches in Bavaria, constructed between 1682 and 1704. In this abbey, you can visit the monastic library, a gem of Baroque and early Rococo woodcarving, finished in 1726.

The Stiftland Museum impressively documents the life of our ancestors. You will also find the largest collection of old workshops and crafting tools in the Upper Palatinate. The programme is complemented by specialised exhibits. All exhibit items are described in both German and Czech.

You can most easily reach it from Cheb by crossing the border at Svatý Kříž or by taking the Wallenstein Cycle Route. In the summer, you can swim in the outdoor forest lido, and in the winter, there is a functioning ski piste located just beyond Waldsassen in Hundsbach.

Marktredwitz - The City of the Landscape Exhibition of 2006

In 2006, the Landscape Exhibition took place thanks to the cross-border cooperation of the towns of Cheb and Marktredwitz.

Quarters of both cities were renovated and revitalised as a part of this exhibition. In Cheb, it was along the banks of the Ohře River, and in Marktredwitz, it was the riparian forest surrounding the riparian lake.

Both locations remained well-tended even after the Landscape Exhibition ended, to the joy and profit of the town citizens.

The town of Marktredwitz is a historical town located 23 km from Cheb, and among other things, you can visit the Egerlandmuseum here.
